Tsinghua President Qiu Yong meets Indonesian President Joko Widodo
Promoting Communication and Cooperation between Chinese and Indonesian Universities, and Training Innovative and Entrepreneurial Talents for Industry
On May 14th, President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University held talks with President Joko Widodo of Indonesia who visited China to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and signed a Letter of Intent on cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Industry to promote communication and cooperation with the industrial sector and universities of Indonesia, and jointly train innovative and entrepreneurial talents for Industry.

During the talk, President Qiu Yong introduced President Joko to the student exchange program between Tsinghua University and the University of Gadjah Mada of Indonesia, as well as the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Indonesian Ministry of Labor. Qiu Yong noted that Tsinghua University would continue to promote international cooperation with Southeast Asia, promote the Belt and Road Initiative, and leverage its own comprehensive advantages in scientific and technological innovation to assist with the industrial upgrading of Indonesian industry. Qiu Yong also introduced relevant information about the establishment of the Asian Universities Alliance in April, and noted that he wished to strengthen communication and cooperation with Indonesian universities via the AUA platform.
President Joko spoke highly of the results of scientific and technological innovation by Tsinghua University during the talk, and noted that he would support the cooperation between Tsinghua University and Indonesia to develop talent training and scientific research in Indonesia.

After the talk, the signing ceremony for the Letter of Intent on cooperation between Tsinghua University and the Indonesian Ministry of Industry took place. President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University and Indonesian Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto addressed the ceremony. Both parties noted that they would promote communication and cooperation between China and the industrial circles of Indonesia by strengthening cooperation, by jointly training innovative and entrepreneurial talents for Indonesian industry. In addition, they agreed to vigorously promote the establishment of the “Tsinghua University Southeast Asia Center” in Indonesia to better develop relevant cooperation projects. Director Li Jinliang presided over the ceremony.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, Chinese Am-bassador in Indonesia Xie Feng, Indonesian Ambassador in China Soegeng Rahardjo, former In-donesian Minister of Trade, Minister of Tourist Economy, and President of the United in Diversity Foundation, Mari Elka Pangestu, and Board Member of the United in Diversity Foundation and Vice President of Giti Group Cherie Nursalim all attended the signing ceremony.
On May 13th , Minister Hartarto led a delegation to visit Tsinghua University and discuss future cooperation plans and implementation measures with Vice President Yang Bin. The minister and his company visited the x-lab and iCenter of Tsinghua University, and interacted with teachers and students of Tsinghua on site.
President Joko Widodo of Indonesia was born in Solo city of Central Java in June 1961, and studied in the undergraduate program of the University of Gadjah Mada of Indonesia. He was elected Mayor of Solo in 2005, Governor of Djakarta in 2012, and President of Indonesia in July 2014.
