Chen Tianyi graduated from Tsinghua University with a Ph.D. in the Department of Hydraulic Engineering. During her time as a student at Tsinghua, she says the biggest benefit is that she has fully explored what kind of person she wants to be.
Various types of support programs at Tsinghua enabled her to take part in social practice in different regions almost every summer and winter vacation, meeting people from all walks of life and learning about the many different lifestyles in the world. Meanwhile, thanks to academic development programs and student clubs, she began to enter the laboratory and initiate scientific research, take on student work, and also experience a wealth of sports and art activities. This process is like the sun gradually penetrating through the clouds at sunrise, in which she also slowly sees her own goals and moves toward them step by step. She said, “Before college, all my efforts were basically related to improving grades. While I was confused about my future path, Tsinghua has given me the greatest tolerance, allowing me to explore and experiment freely, refreshing my outlook on life.”
Tsinghua’s motto comes from a speech given by Liang Qichao on campus, encouraging students to be true Junzi (真君子). In Tianyi’s continuous exploration, she never forgets this expectation. She expects to fully utilize the results of her studies at Tsinghua and continue to study to enrich herself and become a true Junzi with resilience, courage, grace, and elegance.
