​Tsinghua President Li Luming leads delegation to Hong Kong, deepens exchanges and collaboration

Tsinghua University President Li Luming led a delegation to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) from December 15 to 18. Li Luming met with John Lee, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, and Zheng Yanxiong, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and visited relevant institutions and universities, aiming to enhance cooperation with Hong Kong institutions in areas such as talent cultivation and scientific research. They also engaged in exchanges with alumni representatives in Hong Kong.

On December 15, Li Luming met with Zhang Xiang, President of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Gong Peng and Z. Max Shen, both Vice-Presidents of HKU, attended the meeting.

Li Luming shared Tsinghua University’s latest advancements in climate change and carbon neutrality, AI-assisted governance, MOOCs and online education, and other fields. He noted that Tsinghua and HKU have a solid foundation of collaboration and expressed his hope that both sides will continue to expand and strengthen cooperation to support Hong Kong in better integrating into China’ s overall development.

President Zhang Xiang welcomed Li Luming and delegation. He emphasized HKU’s strong commitment to its partnership with Tsinghua and expressed willingness to enhance cooperation with each other, targeting key areas to jointly address global challenges and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

On December 16, Li Luming and his delegation visited the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and met with President Nancy Y. Ip, Provost Guo Yike, and Yuk Fai Fong, Associate Dean of Business and Management, along with more than 20 Tsinghua alumni teaching at HKUST present at the meeting.

Li Luming reviewed the history of collaboration between the two universities, stating that Tsinghua and HKUST should leverage respective strengths while building on their existing cooperation to deepen exchanges and cooperation. He called for joint efforts in key disciplines such as biomedical sciences and artificial intelligence to produce more high-quality scientific and technological innovations to support achieving greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology.

President Nancy Y. Ip introduced the progress of HKUST’s ongoing medical school project and expressed hope for deeper collaboration with Tsinghua, focusing on major national strategic needs in areas such as medicine, life sciences, microelectronics, and business administration, elevating their strategic partnership to a higher level.

In the afternoon of December 16, Li Luming and his delegation visited the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, where they held in-depth discussions with Director Zheng Yanxiong and Deputy Director Luo Yonggang on Tsinghua-Hong Kong collaboration, the coordinated development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and other topics.

Li Luming thanked the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR’s for their meticulous guidance and long-standing support for Tsinghua’s EMPA program in Hong Kong and other exchange initiatives. He pledged that Tsinghua would continue contributing to Hong Kong’s development, supporting the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and better serving national strategic needs.

Director Zheng Yanxiong commended Tsinghua University for its significant contributions to Hong Kong’s development. He expressed hopes for even broader and closer collaboration between Tsinghua and various sectors in Hong Kong, leveraging Hong Kong’s international advantages to support China’s goal of building a leading country in education. Additionally, he highlighted Tsinghua’s role in accelerating Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub and advancing its transition from stability to prosperity.

On December 17, Li Luming and his delegation met with Lam Tai-fai, Chairman of the Council, and President Teng Jin-Guang of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

Li Luming highlighted the close collaboration and ties between the teachers and students of the two universities, emphasizing progress in joint talent development, academic research, cultural exchange, etc. He also expressed hope for further cooperation in education, research innovation, and cultural and educational exchanges to contribute to the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Chairman Lam Tai-fai noted that PolyU and Tsinghua would enhance exchanges and cooperation in education, technology, and talent development, striving to create more opportunities for student exchanges and foster talents who maintain the noble tradition of loving both the motherland and Hong Kong, to Hong Kong’s development.

In the afternoon of December 17, Li Luming met with John Lee, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR at the Chief Executive's Office. Christine Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR, and other officials attended the meeting.

Li Luming expressed gratitude to Chief Executive John Lee and all sectors of Hong Kong for their strong support for the development of Tsinghua University. He mentioned that Tsinghua University's original drama Ma Lan Hua Kai made its debut in Hong Kong last year to widespread acclaim, hailed as "a valuable lesson in patriotism." This year, the Cantonese drama Ma Lan Hua Kai—Ying Xiong Da Ai, co-organized by the University and the Hong Kong Coalition, completed its premiere in Hong Kong, inspiring Hong Kong residents to carry forward the noble tradition of loving both the motherland and Hong Kong, contributing to the stable and enduring implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy. He said that Tsinghua has a solid foundation of cooperation with the HKSAR government. Li Luming shared that Tsinghua is closely following the construction of the third “InnoHK” innovation initiative by the HKSAR government and is leading a major scientific program focusing on climate change and carbon neutrality, inviting Hong Kong universities to join. He looked forward to strengthening cooperation with Hong Kong, promoting innovations in education and technology, as well as the transformation of research outcomes, and contributing to the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Chief Executive John Lee extended his welcome to Li Luming and his delegation. He said that Hong Kong universities are eager to cooperate with Tsinghua University. He reaffirmed that the HKSAR government is fully committed to leading various sectors of the HKSAR to comprehensively study and implement the guiding principles of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee while leveraging the distinctive advantages of the “one country, two systems” policy. Hong Kong aims to establish itself as a leading international hub for innovation, technology, and higher education. As a city renowned for its cultural diversity and a high degree of internationalization, the HKSAR is aligning closely with national strategies and will continue to deepen cooperation with Tsinghua University to foster high-quality development.

Li Luming attends the New Year Event of the Tsinghua Alumni Association of Hong Kong in celebration of the coming of 2025.

During his visit, Li Luming attended the Tsinghua SEM EMBA Alumni Association of Hong Kong and Macao gathering and the New Year event organized by the Tsinghua Alumni Association of Hong Kong. He met with Tsinghua alumni in Hong Kong, extending greetings and appreciation from their alma mater. Li Luming shared recent developments on Tsinghua’s progress in talent cultivation and research innovation, encouraging alumni to carry forward Tsinghua’s motto of “Self-discipline and Social Commitment” and to actively shoulder social responsibilities. He called on alumni to make significant contributions to Hong Kong’s development, the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the prosperity of the nation.

During his visit, Li Luming also met with friends of Tsinghua in Hong Kong who have long supported the University’s development.
