The meeting released the name list of expert committees in the National Coordination Group (NCG) for the Implementation of the Stockholm Convention and the NCG for the Implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Professor Yu Gang from School of Environment, Tsinghua University was appointed as the chairman of committee, and Professor Wang Shuxiao, Professor Li Jinhui, Professor Wen Zongguo and Associate Professor Huang Jun were appointed as members. The committee is specially formed for effectively implementing the two conventions by providing comprehensive decision-making advice and technical support.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the Minamata Convention on Mercury are two important and widely-participated international conventions on global chemicals management. As a major country in chemical production and utilization, China faces an extremely difficult task in complying with the two conventions on POPs and mercury. As one of the first parties to sign the two conventions, the Chinese government attaches great importance to implementing the conventions and fulfill its commitments. The country has made significant contributions to global POPs and mercury pollution control by phasing out and reducing the use of such controlled substances. The faculty members of the School of Environment have seen fruitful results in preparing national implementation plans for the two conventions, R & D of technologies for compliance with the conventions, implementation of demonstration projects, international compliance negotiations, construction of regional centers, and technical services.
